A new type of brain-computer interface allows information from the brain to be transmitted over the skin, using a “Body Area Network” (BAN).

The brain implant (pictured) is used to read specific signals - leg movements, for example - and then transmit the information over the skin to a receiver elsewhere in the body. If the receiver was then implanted in the leg muscles it could allow a disabled person to move their legs, with the signals not needing to pass down the spinal column.

The implant does not require open-skull surgery, but is implanted under the skin to avoid infection. Having the signals transmit through the skin is a big step up from current generation devices which require external wires, which usually restrict users to sitting in a wheelchair.

I posted this a few days ago as a response to someone else, and now that I think about it, I think that the video warrants its own post. It’s a beautifully designed video with a very interesting topic! Stuxnet is the first in a long line of “super viruses” that have the ability to enter nearly any computer network through legitimate means and target specific parts of the network. Stuxnet’s specific target was the computer network of Iran’s nuclear facility. The Stuxnet virus was found in power plants around the world but only negatively afflicted Iran’s stations. It’s amazing at what code can do, especially now that Stuxnet’s “DNA” is out on the net for anyone to use or alter! In the past, wars and revolutions were fought with bullets, now we’re entering an age where they’re fought with code.
